The Recording Industry Association of America announced yesterday that streaming will now factor into an album's certification as Gold or Platinum.
1,500 on-demand audio and/or video streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale.
Though the RIAA Digital Single Award already takes streaming numbers into account, it's also been updated "to reflect streaming’s enormous growth in the two plus years since that ratio was set." 1 download now equals 150 on-demand streams. It was previously 100:1.
With the announcement, a number of artists, including Miranda Lambert, the Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and Michael Jackson, saw their albums certified or re-certified. Jackson's Thriller is now 32x Multi-Platinum.
